If caregivers are concerned about loved ones with dementia not eating properly, Kayla Cook, owner of Caring Excellence Personalized Home Care Services, has the recipe for keeping everyone on the right track:
- Share your meal time with the patient and let her mirror you when you’re eating at the same table. This will allow the caregiver to also give cues to remind the patient that he or she should be eating.
- Have healthy meals prepared ahead of time that are easy to reheat in the microwave.
- Offer healthy snacks during the morning, afternoon, and evening.
- As people age, they develop a sweet tooth. The caregiver can use this to her advantage by adding powdered protein or liquid supplements like Ensure or Boost to a dish of ice cream or a milkshake.
