If you suddenly become a caregiver, it can be difficult to know where to start. Elisabeth Knight, a social worker at Louisville’s Caring Excellence, shares three basic steps for caregivers.
She recommends that caregivers receive education about their loved one’s diagnosis, seek out respite services, and ask for support from family or local groups.
For support, Knight suggests a new U of L caregivers’ workshop series at the main campus library from 12 to 12:45pm on the second Tuesday of each month.
And while respite services aren’t often free, there are options. For instance, Caring Excellence charges a fee for services, but free respite care is available during the Caring Excellence support group held at the Milestone center. If you choose to attend this support group, contact Caring Excellence in advance (502-208-9424) to ensure proper staff has been scheduled.
