It is a good idea for everyone to be prepared for the unexpected. Sometimes these unexpected events come in the form of natural disasters, such as a tornado or in winter, a blizzard. An unexpected trip to the emergency room can be another. Having the pieces of an emergency bag at the ready can make these unexpected events a little less scary and overwhelming.
The CDC provides an extensive list of items to include in an emergency kit, such as a three-day supply of medication, hearing aids and extra batteries, and glasses or contacts (with solution). In the age of COVID-19, disposable masks and hand sanitizers need to be part of the bag. Paperwork, too, is critical to include in the bag, including health insurance cards, identification cards, and a list of contact numbers for family and friends.
Even when it is cold, dehydration can be a real concern for older adults so something to consider for the emergency bag is electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte. There are also electrolyte drink mixes, such as Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier, that are able to hydrate a person two or three times faster than with water alone.
