Elizabeth Cook, community outreach coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana, shares this advice for those who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.
“When the person you are caring for still looks like your mom or still looks like your husband of 50 years, it’s hard to remember that things are really changing,” Cook says. “You might be asking them to do something that they are truly not capable of doing. We have an easier time with this when we see someone with a physical difference. For instance, you wouldn’t see someone in a wheelchair and demand them to run down the street. Yet this is exactly what we often ask our person with memory loss to do.”
