Summer is the perfect time for kids to engage in water play! It’s a fun way to cool off and spend time being active outside. And did you know that sensory play, like in water, is soothing for all ages and can help regulate emotions and relieve stress? So, grab your grandkids and their buckets, cups, and goggles and head out to one of these 3 free splash pads where the water jumps and leaps all around you.
1. Tyler Park: Located in the Highlands, Tyler Park opened in 1910, but the playground and adjoining sprayground was part of the renovation in 2018. This splash pad comes with jumping water features and ground sprays kiddos will love. It’s situated beside a traditional playground that includes nature play activities, so your kids can run through the water sprays and then hop on a swing to dry off. Bardstown Road eateries and Carmichaels Kid’s Bookstore are within walking distance, so plan your afternoon adventure with activities everyone loves.
2. Waterfront Park: With the Ohio River providing the ideal backdrop for water play, the Splash Park at Waterfront Park includes water cannons for soaking friends (or you), spray misters, and colorful fish that spray water and spark the imagination. Bring your buckets and your super soakers to add an extra level of play to this larger splash pad. It’s open weekly from 11-8, and don’t forget the play area right next door with structures for different age groups including slides, bridges, and climbing areas.
3. Marshall Sprayground: There’s no shortage of fun water play to be had here as you watch your grandchild run under spray tunnels, stand under the tipping water buckets, or hop over the ground sprays at Beckley Creek Park. And when you need a little break from all the wet, there are shaded picnic tables nearby for a juice box or a shared lunch. Hours are 8am to 7:30pm. Oh, and this sprayground comes with a bonus: Restrooms are located close by!
