Roderick Williams, 57, goes to the YMCA with his wife Sharon several times a week. “We work out together and try to hold each other accountable in staying fit. The more a couple does anything together, the better their relationship will be. Having a workout a partner makes a difference, even if it is another member of the YMCA.”
What Is The Best Thing You Gain From Being Fit?
I believe our bodies are supposed to be our temples of God, and we should be responsible stewards of them. Secondly, exercise is the only thing that reverses age, and I love the adrenaline rush I receive after my workout is complete.
What Are Some Tips For Someone Looking To See Results Fast?
A healthy body with better lab results at the doctor, more strength and energy, a sense of purpose and a more active mind.
How Did You Get Started On Your Fitness Journey?
I’ve always been an active person. However, I guess you can say my fitness journey really took off in high school where I played football and ran track at the age of 14. I liked sports and the team camaraderie that came along with it.
What Is Your Fitness Routine?
I workout at the YMCA on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. My workout consist of the following: weights, both free and universal for 45 minutes, elliptical and bike for 7.5 minutes each, treadmill for 15 minutes, sauna for 10 minutes, and laps in the pool for 30 minutes.
The other days I walk outside, weather permitting, with the exception of Sundays. I usually walk outside for 3 to 4 miles.
What Is Your Diet?
I generally eat a banana or oatmeal for breakfast, a sandwich, chips and a yogurt for lunch, and fish and chicken with one starch and one green vegetable for dinner. I primarily eat a lot of fish and chicken. Lately, I’ve been eating a salad every other day and have lost about 15 pounds within the last six weeks.
Do You Plan Rest?
I’ve been blessed to be retired for two years now, so rest is at a premium. Traveling has been my preferred method of rest and relaxation by the grace of God. I’ve taken 5 trips so far.
What Do You Do To Help Your Mind/Spirit/Emotional Health?
Seeking and continuously developing my relationship with Jesus Christ is the foundation of my mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Reading the Bible, attending and working in the church are both a part of my regular routine and practices in conjunction with my workouts. I love sharing the Gospel and ministering to people at the YMCA and the other places I go. I’ve found many brothers and sisters in Christ at the YMCA.
What Would You Suggest To Someone Who Is Over 45 Who Wants To Get Fit?
Make exercise an integral part of your life. Treat it like a medication that you have to take to survive. It stimulates the mind and body and increases your thought processes. Start with a 20 minute walk every day.
What Would You Say To Someone To Encourage Them To Start Working On Their Fitness?
You can’t do anything if you’re unhealthy. If you don’t love Christ, you don’t love yourself and you can’t love anyone else. If you love yourself, then you’ll take care of yourself.
