Halloween time is family time here in Louisville, with so many kid-friendly events and activities happening all month. Choose from pumpkin picking to trick-or-treating or an eerie Halloween-themed walk-through, all designed to celebrate the fall and bring out the holiday “spirits” in all of us.
1. Trick-or-treating: Happening on select nights in October (and September), Boo at the Zoo is a family favorite for kids 11 and under. Put on your favorite costume, and then go grab all your treats! Be sure to check out the Spooktacular Carousel and the Not-So-Itsy-Bitsy Spider House. Sensory-friendly nights are also available, and tickets are required for entry.
2. Halloween hike: Walk through the woods while you marvel at over 5,000 glowing jack-o’-lanterns at the much-anticipated Jack O’Lantern Spectacular at Iroquois Park. These artistically carved pumpkins will ignite your Halloween spirit as characters you and your grandkids recognize from Disney, Halloween movies, and even local celebrities glow brightly through the trees. Find your favorite as you stroll through this ⅓-mile walking trail. Tickets are available online and the event runs from Oct. 1 – Nov. 2.
3. Decorated Neighborhoods: Get out your strollers and/or strap in your car seats to experience the annual Halloween on Hillcrest. Drive or walk through the decorated houses at a time that works for you, as there is no set time for this event. Houses are usually completely decked out by mid-October, and the neighborhood can get crowded on the weekends, so plan (and nap) accordingly.
4. Trunk or Treat: If you haven’t yet experienced the ease and fun of a “trunk or treat,” Sauerbeck Drive-In is perfect for you first-timers. This alternative to trick-or-treating has cars all gathered in one spot to give out candy to kids, which means walking is limited and the candy is abundant. Start trunk-or-treating on Saturday, October 26 in the drive-in, and then stay for showings of Hotel Transylvania and Monster House.
5. Sincere Pumpkin Patches: Two of the best pumpkin patches in Kentucky are only a short drive from Louisville: Huber and Gallrein Farms offer families the chance to spend quality time outdoors while picking out the perfect pumpkin. With hayrides, corn mazes, haunted houses, farm animals, and yummy treats waiting for you, it’s easy to spend a day celebrating the Halloween spirit at these family-owned farms.
