From Derby events to music festivals and fairs, you’ll love the activities waiting for you right outside your doorstep.
The first week of May shouts Kentucky Derby and all its festivities. The Great Steamboat Race starts us off on May 1. As one of the longest-standing Derby traditions, the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati battle it out down the Ohio River beginning at 6pm. Then at Churchill Downs we have Thurby on Thursday, May 2, the Kentucky Oaks for 3-year-old fillies on Friday, and The Run For The Roses on Saturday, May 4. Whether you watch from the infield, the stands, or the television at a family party, we can all bet on the 150th running to be a good time.
If you’re ready to keep the party going, the day after Derby is Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico’s 1862 victory over invading French troops. Check out 4th Street Live’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration and the “free family-friendly fiesta” they’re throwing. With music, food, kids’ activities and more, the party starts at 2pm and ends at 8pm.
A good time for the whole family starts on May 11 when Kentucky Kingdom officially opens. Enjoy over 70 rides including speedy roller coasters, spinny tea cups, or the slower Tin Lizzie cars. One week later, you can take the whole family to the music festival Poorcastle, where there’s tons of local music, food, drinks, and vendors to check out. This is the 10-year anniversary of this nonprofit festival, in full swing from May 17-19.
The end of month packs in more music festivals. For you Beatles fans, there’s Abbey Road on the River starting May 23-27 and featuring over 250 Beatles and ‘60s-themed concerts. Those attending this outdoor festival can also enjoy Beatles merchandise, food, beverages, and crafts for kids. And let’s end the month with the Norton Commons art fair on May 18-19 and Gazebo Festival on May 25-26 at Waterfront Park.
